Wednesday 16 March 2016, 13.00-16.00, Newcastle University (Doctoral Training Room, Daysh Building, 5.68)
A collaboration between Newcastle University Humanities Research Institute and National Boundaries in Early Modern Literary Studies, a British Academy Rising Star Engagement Award (BARSEA) project.
The workshop’s aims are to offer training and advice about acquiring and sharpening language skills for researchers (especially postgraduates and early career scholars) in all areas of early modern studies (c. 1400-1800), including English, Modern Languages, Music and History. The discussion will encourage researchers to share experiences and think about how new initiatives might support researchers working in languages other than English.
After a brief introductory talk about the National Boundaries project, the workshop will consist of a structured discussion based on pre-circulated questions. Topics for discussion may include: library and web resources for language study; developing expertise using historical forms of languages; using archives and attending conferences abroad; creating conditions to encourage multilingual research; providing support through research networks, collaborations and mentoring; possible initiatives for training and support in the North East.
The event will begin with a buffet lunch from 13.15. The discussion will begin at 14.00 and end by 16.00. All are welcome, but places are limited. We will reimburse all reasonable travel expenses to and from the workshop. To register, please contact the organizers (Peter Auger, Kate De Rycker and Niall Oddy) at [email protected] before 24 February 2016.
